Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. When we compared Fondren Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Stevenson Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Fondren Middle School’s regular student population is 967 with a 18.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Stevenson Middle School is 1,260 students and a 17.3 students/teacher ratio.
Fondren Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 55 in student achievement, 69 in school progress and 71 in closing performance gaps. It scored 70 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Stevenson Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 80 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 85 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Stevenson Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Fondren Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Fondren Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 67.11% of student population, followed by African Americans (29.06%), Asians (1.65%), Whites or Caucasians (1.14%), Two or More Races (0.72%) and Native Americans (0.31%).
At Stevenson Middle School, Hispanics make up 90.87% of student population, followed by African Americans (4.60%), Asians (3.41%), Whites or Caucasians (0.71%), Two or More Races (0.24%) and Native Americans (0.08%).
Based on household incomes, Fondren Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 92.86% compared to 91.59% at Stevenson Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Fondren Middle School has 508 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 52.53% of student population. Stevenson Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 573 or about 45.48% of student population.
In addition, Fondren Middle School has 51.60% bilingual students, 8.89% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.89% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Stevenson Middle School with 45.16% bilingual students, 24.52% gifted and talented students and 8.25% students in the special education program.
