Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Faubion Middle School, which is a part of MCKINNEY ISD, with Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School, which is a part of MCKINNEY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Faubion Middle School’s regular student population is 1,310 with a 14.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School is 918 students and a 14.4 students/teacher ratio.
Faubion Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and 97 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 85 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 87 in closing performance gaps and 86 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only four distinction designations or awards for outstanding performance. For Faubion Middle School these are in Mathematics, Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps while Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School secured in Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Faubion Middle School. They make up for 40.46% of student population, followed by Hispanics (36.56%), African Americans (14.58%), Two or More Races (4.27%), Asians (3.28%) and Native Americans (0.61%).
The student population at Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 38.13%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.59%), African Americans (20.59%), Two or More Races (4.90%), Asians (3.70%) and Native Americans (0.65%).
Based on household incomes, the Faubion Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 39.77% compared to 43.36% at Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Faubion Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 19.69% of its student population compared to 16.12% at Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School.
Faubion Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 19.47%, gifted and talented students, 13.66%, while 14.27% are in the special education program. Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School bilingual students comprise 15.58%, gifted and talented students, 7.73%, and 17.76% are in the special education program.
Faubion Middle School's 89 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.5 years. Teachers at Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School, numbering 63 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Faubion Middle School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 35 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 22 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers. Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 13 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Faubion Middle School there are 67 female teachers and 21 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
At Scott Morgan Johnson Middle School there are 50 female teachers and 13 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
