Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Elizabeth Smith Academy, which is a part of MANSFIELD ISD, with Willie Brown Academy, which is a part of MANSFIELD ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Elizabeth Smith Academy has a regular student population of 584 with a 14.2 students/teacher ratio while Willie Brown Academy has 566 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.7 students/teacher ratio.
Elizabeth Smith Academy performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Willie Brown Academy earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Elizabeth Smith Academy and Willie Brown Academy are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Elizabeth Smith Academy. They make up for 33.39% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.16%), Hispanics (21.58%), Two or More Races (6.85%), Asians (6.34%) and Native Americans (0.51%).
The student population at Willie Brown Academy is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 47.00%, followed by African Americans (18.73%), Hispanics (18.20%), Asians (9.19%) and Two or More Races (6.54%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Elizabeth Smith Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 26.54% compared to 24.38% at Willie Brown Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, 11.13% of students at Elizabeth Smith Academy are English Language Learners (ELL). On the other hand, Willie Brown Academy’s ELL comprise 11.48% of the school’s student population.
Elizabeth Smith Academy’s bilingual students comprise 10.79%, gifted and talented students, 3.25%, while 8.39% are in the special education program. Willie Brown Academy bilingual students comprise 11.31%, gifted and talented students, 3.18%, and 11.48% are in the special education program.
41 teachers employed at Elizabeth Smith Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.1 years. The 38 teachers at Willie Brown Academy have been serving the school for an average of 11.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.1 years.
