Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Elizabeth Smith Academy, which is a part of MANSFIELD ISD, with Tarver-Rendon Ag Leadership, which is a part of MANSFIELD ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Elizabeth Smith Academy has a regular student population of 584 with a 14.2 students/teacher ratio while Tarver-Rendon Ag Leadership has 563 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.1 students/teacher ratio.
Elizabeth Smith Academy performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Elizabeth Smith Academy and Tarver-Rendon Ag Leadership are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Elizabeth Smith Academy. They make up for 33.39% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.16%), Hispanics (21.58%), Two or More Races (6.85%), Asians (6.34%) and Native Americans (0.51%).
At Tarver-Rendon Ag Leadership, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 60.21% of student population, followed by Hispanics (30.73%), African Americans (4.26%), Two or More Races (3.55%), Asians (1.07%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
Based on household incomes, the Elizabeth Smith Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 26.54% compared to 46.71% at Tarver-Rendon Ag Leadership.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Elizabeth Smith Academy has 65 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.13% of student population. Tarver-Rendon Ag Leadership has more ELLs at 66 or about 11.72% of student population.
Elizabeth Smith Academy’s bilingual students comprise 10.79%, gifted and talented students, 3.25%, while 8.39% are in the special education program. Tarver-Rendon Ag Leadership bilingual students comprise 11.72%, gifted and talented students, 1.60%, and 10.48% are in the special education program.
41 teachers employed at Elizabeth Smith Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.1 years. The 37 teachers at Tarver-Rendon Ag Leadership have been serving the school for an average of 11.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15 years.
