Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Durham Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Emerson Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Durham Elementary School has a regular student population of 552 with a 17.2 students/teacher ratio while Emerson Elementary School has 921 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.7 students/teacher ratio.
Durham Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and 83 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Emerson Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 67 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Durham Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and with 25% student progress. Emerson Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Durham Elementary School. They make up for 64.67% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.37%), African Americans (9.78%), Two or More Races (1.45%) and Asians (0.72%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Emerson Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 62.87% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.92%), Whites or Caucasians (9.12%), Asians (8.69%), Two or More Races (1.09%) and Native Americans (0.11%).
Based on household incomes, the Durham Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 59.06% compared to 94.79% at Emerson Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Durham Elementary School has 188 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 34.06% of student population. Emerson Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 623 or about 67.64% of student population.
Durham Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 71.01%, gifted and talented students, 11.23%, while 7.61% are in the special education program. Emerson Elementary School bilingual students comprise 68.51%, gifted and talented students, 3.47%, and 5.10% are in the special education program.
