Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Doerre Intermediate, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, with Ulrich Intermediate, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Doerre Intermediate’s regular student population is 1,347 with a 16 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Ulrich Intermediate is 1,326 students and a 14.7 students/teacher ratio.
Doerre Intermediate performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 98 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Ulrich Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 80 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 80 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Doerre Intermediate's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Ulrich Intermediate did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Doerre Intermediate. They make up for 44.91% of student population, followed by Hispanics (25.09%), Asians (14.85%), African Americans (10.69%), Two or More Races (3.86%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
The student population at Ulrich Intermediate is also predominantly by Hispanics at 45.32%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (24.43%), African Americans (17.87%), Asians (8.97%), Two or More Races (3.02%) and Native Americans (0.38%).
Based on household incomes, the Doerre Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 26.43% compared to 54.00% at Ulrich Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Doerre Intermediate has 84 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 6.24% of student population. Ulrich Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 210 or about 15.84% of student population.
Doerre Intermediate’s bilingual students comprise 6.01%, gifted and talented students, 15.59%, while 8.83% are in the special education program. Ulrich Intermediate bilingual students comprise 15.23%, gifted and talented students, 6.41%, and 14.10% are in the special education program.
Doerre Intermediate's 84 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.3 years. Teachers at Ulrich Intermediate, numbering 90 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Doerre Intermediate has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 16 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. Ulrich Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 20 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 13 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Doerre Intermediate there are 67 female teachers and 17 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has zero staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Ulrich Intermediate there are 64 female teachers and 25 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and 11 more working as school support staff.
