Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Dean Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Goodson Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Dean Middle School’s regular student population is 1,339 with a 14 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Goodson Middle School is 1,431 students and a 18.1 students/teacher ratio.
Dean Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Goodson Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 89 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Dean Middle School’s only distinction designation is in Social Studies. Goodson Middle School's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Dean Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 73.11% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.24%), Asians (5.60%), Whites or Caucasians (4.48%), Native Americans (0.97%) and Two or More Races (0.60%).
The student population at Goodson Middle School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 37.11%, followed by Hispanics (32.98%), African Americans (15.79%), Asians (10.76%), Two or More Races (2.87%) and Native Americans (0.42%).
Based on household incomes, Dean Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 88.20% compared to 38.92% at Goodson Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Dean Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 27.93% of its student population compared to 6.22% at Goodson Middle School.
In addition, Dean Middle School has 26.74% bilingual students, 3.73% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.35% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Goodson Middle School with 5.59% bilingual students, 12.44% gifted and talented students and 9.92% students in the special education program.
Dean Middle School's 95 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.8 years. Teachers at Goodson Middle School, numbering 79 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 10.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Dean Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 26 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 36 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Goodson Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 18 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 29 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Dean Middle School there are 67 female teachers and 28 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 11 special education teachers are being assisted by 19 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and 16 more working as school support staff.
At Goodson Middle School there are 57 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by 16 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
