Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared De Zavala Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Berry Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
De Zavala Elementary School has a regular student population of 453 with a 15 students/teacher ratio while Berry Elementary School has 757 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.6 students/teacher ratio.
De Zavala Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. De Zavala Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Berry Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Mathematics.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in De Zavala Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 98.01% of student population, followed by African Americans (1.32%), Asians (0.44%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.22%). There is no Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
At Berry Elementary School, Hispanics make up 90.62% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.00%), Whites or Caucasians (1.45%), Asians (0.26%), Two or More Races (0.26%) and Native Americans (0.13%).
Based on household incomes, the De Zavala Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 96.03% compared to 99.47% at Berry Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, De Zavala Elementary School has 218 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 48.12% of student population. Berry Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 396 or about 52.31% of student population.
De Zavala Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 46.58%, gifted and talented students, 16.11%, while 7.28% are in the special education program. Berry Elementary School bilingual students comprise 49.27%, gifted and talented students, 4.23%, and 7.79% are in the special education program.

The 43 teachers at Berry Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years.
