Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared De Zavala Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, with Travis Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
De Zavala Elementary School has a regular student population of 662 with a 16.7 students/teacher ratio while Travis Elementary School has 925 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.6 students/teacher ratio.
De Zavala Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. On the other hand, Travis Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 69 in student achievement, 70 in school progress, 69 in closing performance gaps and 70 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
De Zavala Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Travis Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at De Zavala Elementary School. They make up for 56.34% of student population, followed by African Americans (23.87%), Whites or Caucasians (14.50%), Two or More Races (3.93%), Asians (0.91%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
At Travis Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 61.41% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.62%), Whites or Caucasians (15.57%), Two or More Races (2.49%), Asians (2.27%) and Native Americans (0.43%).
Based on household incomes, De Zavala Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 83.23% compared to 71.89% at Travis Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, De Zavala Elementary School has 131 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 19.79% of student population. Travis Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 207 or about 22.38% of student population.
In addition, De Zavala Elementary School has 19.34% bilingual students, 3.17% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.67% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Travis Elementary School with 21.95% bilingual students, 6.27% gifted and talented students and 12.22% students in the special education program.

The 52 teachers at Travis Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.8 years.
