Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Cummings Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Hearne Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Cummings Elementary School has a regular student population of 552 with a 11.5 students/teacher ratio while Hearne Elementary School has 824 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.4 students/teacher ratio.
Cummings Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 65 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Hearne Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 69 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only one distinction designation or award for performance. For Cummings Elementary School this is in with 25% student progress while Hearne Elementary School secured one for post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Cummings Elementary School. They make up for 47.28% of student population, followed by African Americans (36.23%), Asians (10.87%), Whites or Caucasians (3.44%), Two or More Races (1.27%) and Native Americans (0.54%).
At Hearne Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 54.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (27.79%), Asians (11.53%), Whites or Caucasians (5.58%) and Two or More Races (0.12%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Cummings Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 90.22% compared to 85.32% at Hearne Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Cummings Elementary School has 255 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 46.20% of student population. Hearne Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 548 or about 66.50% of student population.
Cummings Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 45.83%, gifted and talented students, 0.91%, while 14.86% are in the special education program. Hearne Elementary School bilingual students comprise 66.26%, gifted and talented students, 0.73%, and 11.41% are in the special education program.
48 teachers employed at Cummings Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years. The 66 teachers at Hearne Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Cummings Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Hearne Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Cummings Elementary School there are 46 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 20 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
At Hearne Elementary School there are 57 female teachers and nine male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by 20 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
