Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Condit Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Bastian Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Condit Elementary School has a regular student population of 728 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio while Bastian Elementary School has 664 students and a student-teacher ratio of 21.4 students/teacher ratio.
Condit Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Bastian Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 58 in student achievement, 75 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Condit Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Bastian Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Condit Elementary School. They make up for 33.65% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (33.10%), Asians (19.37%), African Americans (7.97%) and Two or More Races (5.63%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Bastian Elementary School, African Americans make up 68.52% of student population, followed by Hispanics (29.22%), Two or More Races (1.20%), Whites or Caucasians (0.90%) and Native Americans (0.15%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Condit Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 36.54% compared to 98.64% at Bastian Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Condit Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 26.51% of its student population compared to 22.44% at Bastian Elementary School.
Condit Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 33.93%, gifted and talented students, 28.43%, while 10.99% are in the special education program. Bastian Elementary School bilingual students comprise 22.89%, gifted and talented students, 2.71%, and 7.23% are in the special education program.
41 teachers employed at Condit Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 11.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.6 years. The 31 teachers at Bastian Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Condit Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Bastian Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, one teacher only has worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Condit Elementary School there are 40 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
