Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Collins Intermediate, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Grangerland Intermediate, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Collins Intermediate’s regular student population is 723 with a 16.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Grangerland Intermediate is 1,209 students and a 16.9 students/teacher ratio.
Collins Intermediate performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 95 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 94 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Grangerland Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 69 in student achievement, 75 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Collins Intermediate's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Grangerland Intermediate did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Collins Intermediate. They make up for 56.57% of student population, followed by Hispanics (22.54%), Asians (8.85%), African Americans (6.22%), Two or More Races (5.39%) and Native Americans (0.14%).
At Grangerland Intermediate, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 62.78% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (33.17%), African Americans (2.15%), Two or More Races (0.91%), Native Americans (0.83%) and Asians (0.17%).
Based on household incomes, the Collins Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 14.80% compared to 77.01% at Grangerland Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Collins Intermediate has 29 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.01% of student population. Grangerland Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 517 or about 42.76% of student population.
Collins Intermediate’s bilingual students comprise 4.01%, gifted and talented students, 22.13%, while 6.50% are in the special education program. Grangerland Intermediate bilingual students comprise 41.60%, gifted and talented students, 4.05%, and 13.90% are in the special education program.
Collins Intermediate's 43 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years. Teachers at Grangerland Intermediate, numbering 71 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 4.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Collins Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Grangerland Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 16 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 30 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Collins Intermediate there are 38 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by seven teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Grangerland Intermediate there are 59 female teachers and 12 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by 23 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
