Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.

When we compared Clute Intermediate, which is a part of Brazosport ISD, with Lake Jackson Intermediate, which is a part of Brazosport ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.

Clute Intermediate’s regular student population is 900 with a 14 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Lake Jackson Intermediate is 882 students and a 16.3 students/teacher ratio.
Performance Indicators
Clute Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 70 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, and 70 in closing performance gaps. It scored 75 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

On the other hand, Lake Jackson Intermediate performed better to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 83 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 95 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.

Distinction Designations
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.

It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for 25% closing performance gaps, Clute Intermediate earned 1 out of seven distinctions. Lake Jackson Intermediate’s two out of seven only distinction designation is in Comparative Closing the Gaps.

Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Clute Intermediate are Hispanics who make up nearly 70.67% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (18.33%), African Americans (8.00%), Two or More Races (2.33%), Asians (0.56%) and Native Americans (0.11%).

At Lake Jackson Intermediate, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 49.09% of student population, followed by Hispanics (38.89%), African Americans (6.24%), Two or More Races (3.06%), Asians (1.93%) and Native Americans (0.68%).

Based on household incomes, Clute Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students are slightly lower at 78.44% compared to 43.42% at Lake Jackson Intermediate.

In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Clute Intermediate and Lake Jackson Intermediate have no English Language Leaners or ELLS.

Clute Intermediate’s 64 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 4.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.5 years. Teachers at Lake Jackson Intermediate, numbering 54 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years.
