Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Club Estates, which is a part of CORPUS CHRISTI ISD, with Shaw Ses, which is a part of CORPUS CHRISTI ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Club Estates has a regular student population of 360 with a 14 students/teacher ratio while Shaw Ses has 358 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.8 students/teacher ratio.
Club Estates performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Shaw Ses earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 64 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Club Estates's four out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Shaw Ses’s three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Club Estates is Hispanics who make up nearly 79.44% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (15.83%), African Americans (2.22%), Two or More Races (1.39%) and Asians (1.11%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Shaw Ses, Hispanics make up 94.41% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.51%), Whites or Caucasians (2.51%) and Two or More Races (0.56%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Club Estates’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 73.89% compared to 95.81% at Shaw Ses.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Club Estates has 8 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 2.22% of student population. Shaw Ses has significantly more ELLs at 87 or about 24.30% of student population.
Club Estates has no gifted and talented student, while 9.44% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 1.94% students. Shaw Ses has no gifted and talented student, while 8.94% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 22.91% students.
25 teachers employed at Club Estates have been teaching in the school for an average of about 12.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.1 years. The 24 teachers at Shaw Ses have been serving the school for an average of 11.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Club Estates has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, three teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while three teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Shaw Ses has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, six teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Club Estates there are 23 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
