Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Christie Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Miller Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Christie Elementary School has a regular student population of 567 with a 11.4 students/teacher ratio while Miller Elementary School has 348 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.2 students/teacher ratio.
Christie Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Miller Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 87 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Christie Elementary School and Miller Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Christie Elementary School. They make up for 46.38% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (26.63%), African Americans (15.17%), Two or More Races (5.82%), Asians (5.64%) and Native Americans (0.35%).
The student population at Miller Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 45.69%, followed by Asians (22.70%), Hispanics (14.66%), African Americans (9.48%), Two or More Races (6.90%) and Native Americans (0.57%).
Based on household incomes, Christie Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 55.91% compared to 24.43% at Miller Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Christie Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 35.63% of its student population compared to 18.68% at Miller Elementary School.
Christie Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 35.27%, gifted and talented students, 7.41%, while 16.93% are in the special education program. Miller Elementary School bilingual students comprise 18.10%, gifted and talented students, 6.90%, and 13.51% are in the special education program.
49 teachers employed at Christie Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years. The 28 teachers at Miller Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 9.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Christie Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Miller Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Christie Elementary School there are 45 female teachers and four male teachers.
