Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Centennial Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Dooley Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Centennial Elementary School has a regular student population of 464 with a 13 students/teacher ratio while Dooley Elementary School has 302 students and a student-teacher ratio of 9.4 students/teacher ratio.
Centennial Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Dooley Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 89 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for with 25% student progress, Centennial Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions. Dooley Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Centennial Elementary School. They make up for 39.22% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.91%), Hispanics (10.34%), African Americans (9.70%), Two or More Races (5.60%) and Native Americans (0.22%).
The student population at Dooley Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 34.44%, followed by Hispanics (32.78%), African Americans (14.90%), Asians (11.26%), Two or More Races (4.97%) and Native Americans (1.66%).
Based on household incomes, the Centennial Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 15.09% compared to 44.70% at Dooley Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Centennial Elementary School has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 15.95% of its student population compared to 20.53% at Dooley Elementary School.
Centennial Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 16.16%, gifted and talented students, 14.87%, while 11.21% are in the special education program. Dooley Elementary School bilingual students comprise 19.54%, gifted and talented students, 9.93%, and 18.21% are in the special education program.
35 teachers employed at Centennial Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.1 years. The 32 teachers at Dooley Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 12.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14 years.

In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Centennial Elementary School there are 33 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
