Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Carver Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, with James Bowie Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Carver Elementary School has a regular student population of 653 with a 14.3 students/teacher ratio while James Bowie Elementary School has 732 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.1 students/teacher ratio.
Carver Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 62 in student achievement, 70 in school progress and 68 in closing performance gaps. It scored 69 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, James Bowie Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 69 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 80 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Carver Elementary School and James Bowie Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Carver Elementary School. They make up for 65.54% of student population, followed by African Americans (23.58%), Whites or Caucasians (7.66%), Two or More Races (1.99%), Native Americans (0.77%) and Asians (0.46%).
At James Bowie Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 63.39% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.13%), Whites or Caucasians (12.43%), Two or More Races (1.64%), Native Americans (0.27%) and Asians (0.14%).
Based on household incomes, Carver Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 88.82% compared to 77.73% at James Bowie Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Carver Elementary School has 164 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 25.11% of student population. James Bowie Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 175 or about 23.91% of student population.
In addition, Carver Elementary School has 32.01% bilingual students, 2.91% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.40% are in the special education program. This stacks up against James Bowie Elementary School with 23.36% bilingual students, 4.37% gifted and talented students and 16.26% students in the special education program.
