Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Carver Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, with Harlem Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Carver Elementary School has a regular student population of 653 with a 14.3 students/teacher ratio while Harlem Elementary School has 718 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15 students/teacher ratio.
Carver Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 62 in student achievement, 70 in school progress and 68 in closing performance gaps. It scored 69 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Harlem Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 71 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Carver Elementary School and Harlem Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Carver Elementary School. They make up for 65.54% of student population, followed by African Americans (23.58%), Whites or Caucasians (7.66%), Two or More Races (1.99%), Native Americans (0.77%) and Asians (0.46%).
At Harlem Elementary School, Hispanics make up 66.16% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.14%), Whites or Caucasians (8.77%), Two or More Races (2.51%), Asians (0.14%) and Native Americans (0.14%).
Based on household incomes, Carver Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 88.82% compared to 86.21% at Harlem Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Carver Elementary School has 164 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 25.11% of student population. Harlem Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 200 or about 27.86% of student population.
In addition, Carver Elementary School has 32.01% bilingual students, 2.91% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.40% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Harlem Elementary School with 33.84% bilingual students, 5.71% gifted and talented students and 15.18% students in the special education program.
