When we compared Carnegie Vanguard High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sharpstown High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Carnegie Vanguard High School’s regular student population is 913 with a student-teacher ratio of 24.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Sharpstown High School is 1,731 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.7 students/teacher ratio.
Carnegie Vanguard High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 97 in student achievement, 98 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sharpstown High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 67 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 76 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Carnegie Vanguard High School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Sharpstown High School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Carnegie Vanguard High School. They make up for 30.89% of student population, followed by Asians (30.56%), Whites or Caucasians (22.02%), African Americans (11.61%), Two or More Races (4.16%) and Native Americans (0.22%).
At Sharpstown High School, Hispanics make up 79.66% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.66%), Asians (2.54%), Whites or Caucasians (1.68%), Native Americans (0.35%) and Two or More Races (0.12%).
Based on household incomes, the Carnegie Vanguard High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 35.05% compared to 83.42% at Sharpstown High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Carnegie Vanguard High School has 3 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 0.33% of student population. Sharpstown High School has significantly more ELLs at 963 or about 55.63% of student population.
Carnegie Vanguard High School’s bilingual students comprise 0.88%, gifted and talented students, 99.78%, while 0.77% are in the special education program. Sharpstown High School bilingual students comprise 54.48%, gifted and talented students, 5.95%, and 8.20% are in the special education program.
