Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Canyon Ridge Middle School, which is a part of LEANDER ISD, with Leander Middle School, which is a part of LEANDER ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Canyon Ridge Middle School’s regular student population is 1,163 with a 16.3 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Leander Middle School is 821 students and a 11.9 students/teacher ratio.
Canyon Ridge Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 84 in school progress and 89 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Leander Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 82 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 80 in closing performance gaps and 81 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Canyon Ridge Middle School and Leander Middle School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Canyon Ridge Middle School. They make up for 62.68% of student population, followed by Hispanics (14.27%), Asians (14.19%), Two or More Races (6.79%), African Americans (1.81%) and Native Americans (0.09%).
The student population at Leander Middle School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 47.02%, followed by Hispanics (37.39%), Asians (5.24%), Two or More Races (4.99%), African Americans (4.63%) and Native Americans (0.61%).
Based on household incomes, the Canyon Ridge Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 4.47% compared to 28.50% at Leander Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Canyon Ridge Middle School has 34 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 2.92% of student population. Leander Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 101 or about 12.30% of student population.
Canyon Ridge Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 2.75%, gifted and talented students, 41.27%, while 10.83% are in the special education program. Leander Middle School bilingual students comprise 12.30%, gifted and talented students, 20.58%, and 17.42% are in the special education program.
Canyon Ridge Middle School's 71 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.4 years. Teachers at Leander Middle School, numbering 68 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Canyon Ridge Middle School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
