Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Campbell Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Diane Winborn Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Campbell Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,483 with a 16.3 students/teacher ratio while Diane Winborn Elementary School has 678 students and a student-teacher ratio of 11.9 students/teacher ratio.
Campbell Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Diane Winborn Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 78 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 88 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for Science, Campbell Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions. Diane Winborn Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Campbell Elementary School. They make up for 31.56% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (29.47%), Asians (24.41%), African Americans (9.64%), Two or More Races (4.65%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
The student population at Diane Winborn Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 41.74%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (28.61%), African Americans (18.44%), Two or More Races (6.19%) and Asians (4.87%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Campbell Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 17.40% compared to 61.80% at Diane Winborn Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Campbell Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 34.73% of its student population compared to 14.01% at Diane Winborn Elementary School.
Campbell Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 33.85%, gifted and talented students, 6.14%, while 13.96% are in the special education program. Diane Winborn Elementary School bilingual students comprise 13.57%, gifted and talented students, 2.51%, and 21.68% are in the special education program.
91 teachers employed at Campbell Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years. The 57 teachers at Diane Winborn Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Campbell Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 33 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 20 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 26 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Diane Winborn Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Campbell Elementary School there are 86 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by 25 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and 13 more working as school support staff.
At Diane Winborn Elementary School there are 51 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 20 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
