Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Cameron Elementary School, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, with M L King Academy, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Cameron Elementary School has a regular student population of 292 with a 15.6 students/teacher ratio while M L King Academy has 261 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.2 students/teacher ratio.
Cameron Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 62 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, M L King Academy earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 56 in student achievement, 74 in school progress, 68 in closing performance gaps and 72 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Cameron Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. M L King Academy did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Cameron Elementary School. They make up for 57.19% of student population, followed by Hispanics (35.62%), Two or More Races (5.14%) and Whites or Caucasians (2.05%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
The student population at M L King Academy is also predominantly by Hispanics at 49.81%, followed by African Americans (45.21%), Two or More Races (2.30%), Whites or Caucasians (1.53%), Asians (0.38%) and Native Americans (0.38%).
Based on household incomes, Cameron Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 95.21% compared to 94.25% at M L King Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, 1.71% of students at Cameron Elementary School are English Language Learners (ELL). On the other hand, M L King Academy’s ELL comprise 1.92% of the school’s student population.
In addition, Cameron Elementary School has 0.34% bilingual students, 2.40% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.93% are in the special education program. This stacks up against M L King Academy with 0.38% bilingual students, 4.60% gifted and talented students and 17.62% students in the special education program.
