Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.

When we compared Calallen Wood River Elementary School, which is a part of Calallen ISD, with Magee Elementary School, which is a part of Calallen ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.

Calallen Wood River Elementary School has a regular student population of 636 with a 15.3 students/teacher ratio while Magee Elementary School has 623 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.3 students/teacher ratio.
Performance Indicators
Calallen Wood River Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, and 90 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

On the other hand, Magee Elementary School garnered a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 86 in student achievement, 84 in school progress, 90 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.

Distinction Designations
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.

It is in this area where the two schools differ. Calallen Wood River Elementary School’s four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Magee Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Science and 25% closing performance gaps.

Student Demographics
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Calallen Wood River Elementary School. They make up for 60.06% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (36.48%), Two or More Races (1.73%), Asians (0.94%), African Americans (0.47%) and Native Americans (0.31%).

The student population at Magee Elementary School is also predominantly Hispanics at 59.55%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (37.56%), African Americans (1.28%), Two or More Races (1.12%) and Asians (0.48%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
