Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Bush Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Oak Ridge Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Bush Elementary School has a regular student population of 899 with a 17 students/teacher ratio while Oak Ridge Elementary School has 673 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.1 students/teacher ratio.
Bush Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Oak Ridge Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 80 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 82 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only one distinction designation or award for performance. For Bush Elementary School this is in 25% closing performance gaps while Oak Ridge Elementary School secured one for post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Bush Elementary School. They make up for 60.40% of student population, followed by Hispanics (23.25%), Asians (7.45%), African Americans (5.78%), Two or More Races (2.89%) and Native Americans (0.22%).
The student population at Oak Ridge Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 45.02%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (33.43%), African Americans (13.52%), Two or More Races (4.61%), Asians (2.23%) and Native Americans (0.74%).
Based on household incomes, the Bush Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 15.91% compared to 65.08% at Oak Ridge Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bush Elementary School has 105 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.68% of student population. Oak Ridge Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 206 or about 30.61% of student population.
Bush Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 11.46%, gifted and talented students, 6.90%, while 9.01% are in the special education program. Oak Ridge Elementary School bilingual students comprise 30.31%, gifted and talented students, 1.93%, and 9.66% are in the special education program.
52 teachers employed at Bush Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.1 years. The 47 teachers at Oak Ridge Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Bush Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Oak Ridge Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Bush Elementary School there are 51 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Oak Ridge Elementary School there are 42 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
