Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Bush Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Garcia Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Bush Elementary School has a regular student population of 766 with a 18.2 students/teacher ratio while Garcia Elementary School has 383 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.6 students/teacher ratio.
Bush Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 95 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Bush Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Garcia Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Science and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Bush Elementary School. They make up for 31.59% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.89%), Hispanics (23.63%), African Americans (15.67%), Two or More Races (4.83%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
At Garcia Elementary School, Hispanics make up 72.06% of student population, followed by African Americans (25.85%), Asians (1.04%), Whites or Caucasians (0.52%), Native Americans (0.26%) and Two or More Races (0.26%).
Based on household incomes, the Bush Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 24.80% compared to 98.69% at Garcia Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bush Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 27.68% of its student population compared to 42.30% at Garcia Elementary School.
Bush Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 26.89%, gifted and talented students, 27.55%, while 4.31% are in the special education program. Garcia Elementary School bilingual students comprise 42.56%, gifted and talented students, 5.22%, and 8.36% are in the special education program.
