Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Burbank Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Berry Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Burbank Elementary School has a regular student population of 822 with a 15.2 students/teacher ratio while Berry Elementary School has 757 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.6 students/teacher ratio.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Burbank Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Berry Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Mathematics.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Burbank Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 83.33% of student population, followed by African Americans (14.72%), Whites or Caucasians (1.58%), Native Americans (0.24%) and Asians (0.12%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
At Berry Elementary School, Hispanics make up 90.62% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.00%), Whites or Caucasians (1.45%), Asians (0.26%), Two or More Races (0.26%) and Native Americans (0.13%).
Based on household incomes, the Burbank Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 97.69% compared to 99.47% at Berry Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Burbank Elementary School has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 49.51% of its student population compared to 52.31% at Berry Elementary School.
Burbank Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 48.18%, gifted and talented students, 10.22%, while 8.52% are in the special education program. Berry Elementary School bilingual students comprise 49.27%, gifted and talented students, 4.23%, and 7.79% are in the special education program.

The 43 teachers at Berry Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years.
