Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Buda Elementary School, which is a part of HAYS CISD, with Tobias Elementary School, which is a part of HAYS CISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Buda Elementary School has a regular student population of 678 with a 13.2 students/teacher ratio while Tobias Elementary School has 646 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.8 students/teacher ratio.
Buda Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 85 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Tobias Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 77 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 76 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Buda Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Tobias Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Buda Elementary School. They make up for 58.11% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.71%), Two or More Races (4.72%), African Americans (2.95%), Asians (2.06%) and Native Americans (0.44%).
At Tobias Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 63.93% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (28.64%), African Americans (3.56%), Two or More Races (3.10%), Asians (0.62%) and Native Americans (0.15%).
Based on household incomes, the Buda Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 35.84% compared to 44.12% at Tobias Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Buda Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 5.60% of its student population compared to 4.95% at Tobias Elementary School.
Buda Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 4.72%, gifted and talented students, 4.28%, while 19.17% are in the special education program. Tobias Elementary School bilingual students comprise 4.80%, gifted and talented students, 4.18%, and 17.18% are in the special education program.

The 46 teachers at Tobias Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.4 years.
