Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Bruce Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Roberts Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Bruce Elementary School has a regular student population of 348 with a 13.4 students/teacher ratio while Roberts Elementary School has 676 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.7 students/teacher ratio.
Bruce Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 59 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Bruce Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science. Roberts Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Bruce Elementary School is African Americans who make up nearly 71.84% of student population, followed by Hispanics (26.72%), Asians (0.57%), Two or More Races (0.57%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.29%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Roberts Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 35.36%, followed by Asians (28.70%), Hispanics (14.20%), African Americans (13.46%), Two or More Races (7.99%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
Based on household incomes, Bruce Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 98.28% compared to 17.16% at Roberts Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bruce Elementary School has 40 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.49% of student population. Roberts Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 121 or about 17.90% of student population.
In addition, Bruce Elementary School has 10.92% bilingual students, 4.31% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.33% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Roberts Elementary School with 17.60% bilingual students, 34.02% gifted and talented students and 7.40% students in the special education program.
