Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Bruce Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Cornelius Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.

It is in this area where the two schools differ. Bruce Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science. Cornelius Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Bruce Elementary School is African Americans who make up nearly 71.84% of student population, followed by Hispanics (26.72%), Asians (0.57%), Two or More Races (0.57%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.29%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.

Based on household incomes, Bruce Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 98.28% compared to 94.63% at Cornelius Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bruce Elementary School has 40 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.49% of student population. Cornelius Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 394 or about 49.25% of student population.
In addition, Bruce Elementary School has 10.92% bilingual students, 4.31% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.33% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Cornelius Elementary School with 41.13% bilingual students, 7.25% gifted and talented students and 4.25% students in the special education program.
