Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Brinker Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Memorial Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Brinker Elementary School has a regular student population of 468 with a 13.1 students/teacher ratio while Memorial Elementary School has 415 students and a student-teacher ratio of 9.5 students/teacher ratio.
Brinker Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Memorial Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 60 in school progress, 66 in closing performance gaps and 62 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Brinker Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Memorial Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Brinker Elementary School. They make up for 36.54% of student population, followed by African Americans (21.79%), Hispanics (17.52%), Asians (16.67%) and Two or More Races (7.26%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Memorial Elementary School, Hispanics make up 74.70% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (12.53%), African Americans (8.67%), Two or More Races (2.41%), Asians (1.45%) and Native Americans (0.24%).
Based on household incomes, the Brinker Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 26.50% compared to 74.46% at Memorial Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Brinker Elementary School has 51 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 10.90% of student population. Memorial Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 235 or about 56.63% of student population.
Brinker Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 10.04%, gifted and talented students, 12.61%, while 10.90% are in the special education program. Memorial Elementary School bilingual students comprise 55.42%, gifted and talented students, 5.78%, and 14.46% are in the special education program.
35 teachers employed at Brinker Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.6 years. The 43 teachers at Memorial Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Brinker Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Memorial Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Brinker Elementary School there are 33 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
