Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Briarmeadow Charter, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Garden Oaks Montessori, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Briarmeadow Charter has a regular student population of 564 with a 15.2 students/teacher ratio while Garden Oaks Montessori has 800 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.5 students/teacher ratio.
Briarmeadow Charter performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 96 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Garden Oaks Montessori earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 78 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 85 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Briarmeadow Charter's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Garden Oaks Montessori did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Briarmeadow Charter. They make up for 32.45% of student population, followed by Hispanics (28.37%), Asians (26.42%), African Americans (7.98%), Two or More Races (4.43%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
The student population at Garden Oaks Montessori is also predominantly by Hispanics at 52.88%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.88%), Two or More Races (5.25%), African Americans (5.00%), Asians (4.38%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
Based on household incomes, Briarmeadow Charter’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 46.45% compared to 41.25% at Garden Oaks Montessori.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Briarmeadow Charter has 186 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 32.98% of student population. Garden Oaks Montessori has more ELLs at 191 or about 23.88% of student population.
In addition, Briarmeadow Charter has 32.80% bilingual students, 18.09% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.22% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Garden Oaks Montessori with 23.88% bilingual students, 22.25% gifted and talented students and 14.38% students in the special education program.
37 teachers employed at Briarmeadow Charter have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9 years. The 43 teachers at Garden Oaks Montessori have been serving the school for an average of 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Briarmeadow Charter no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Garden Oaks Montessori has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Briarmeadow Charter there are 34 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
