Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Briargrove Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Garden Oaks Montessori, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Briargrove Elementary School has a regular student population of 812 with a 18.4 students/teacher ratio while Garden Oaks Montessori has 800 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.5 students/teacher ratio.
Briargrove Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 80 in student achievement, 96 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Garden Oaks Montessori earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 78 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 85 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Briargrove Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and with 25% student progress. Garden Oaks Montessori did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Briargrove Elementary School. They make up for 33.74% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (24.01%), African Americans (20.20%), Asians (16.50%), Two or More Races (5.42%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
The student population at Garden Oaks Montessori is also predominantly by Hispanics at 52.88%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.88%), Two or More Races (5.25%), African Americans (5.00%), Asians (4.38%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
Based on household incomes, Briargrove Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 51.23% compared to 41.25% at Garden Oaks Montessori.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Briargrove Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 29.68% of its student population compared to 23.88% at Garden Oaks Montessori.
In addition, Briargrove Elementary School has 27.83% bilingual students, 6.40% are in the gifted and talented program, while 6.53% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Garden Oaks Montessori with 23.88% bilingual students, 22.25% gifted and talented students and 14.38% students in the special education program.
44 teachers employed at Briargrove Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years. The 43 teachers at Garden Oaks Montessori have been serving the school for an average of 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Briargrove Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Garden Oaks Montessori has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Briargrove Elementary School there are 38 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
At Garden Oaks Montessori there are 34 female teachers and nine male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
