Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Brazos Bend Elementary School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with Ridgemont Early Literacy Center, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Brazos Bend Elementary School has a regular student population of 706 with a 10.1 students/teacher ratio while Ridgemont Early Literacy Center has 474 students and a student-teacher ratio of 9.3 students/teacher ratio.
Brazos Bend Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 88 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Ridgemont Early Literacy Center earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted only 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Brazos Bend Elementary School and Ridgemont Early Literacy Center are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Brazos Bend Elementary School. They make up for 40.79% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.09%), Hispanics (17.00%), African Americans (14.16%), Two or More Races (4.82%) and Native Americans (0.14%).
At Ridgemont Early Literacy Center, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 60.55% of student population, followed by African Americans (34.60%), Whites or Caucasians (2.32%), Two or More Races (1.69%) and Native Americans (0.63%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Brazos Bend Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 39.09% compared to 93.04% at Ridgemont Early Literacy Center.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Brazos Bend Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 32.01% of its student population compared to 47.05% at Ridgemont Early Literacy Center.
Brazos Bend Elementary School 9.77% are in the special education program, 3.54% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 31.02% students. Ridgemont Early Literacy Center has no gifted and talented student, while 7.17% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 44.94% students.
70 teachers employed at Brazos Bend Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years. The 51 teachers at Ridgemont Early Literacy Center have been serving the school for an average of 4.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Brazos Bend Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Ridgemont Early Literacy Center no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Brazos Bend Elementary School there are 69 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
At Ridgemont Early Literacy Center there are 48 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
