Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Bradley Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Houser Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Bradley Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,006 with a 16.5 students/teacher ratio while Houser Elementary School has 569 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.5 students/teacher ratio.
Bradley Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Houser Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 83 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Bradley Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Houser Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Mathematics.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Bradley Elementary School. They make up for 41.95% of student population, followed by Hispanics (31.01%), African Americans (16.40%), Asians (5.77%), Two or More Races (4.08%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
The student population at Houser Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 42.53%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (29.17%), African Americans (17.05%), Two or More Races (5.45%), Asians (5.10%) and Native Americans (0.53%).
Based on household incomes, the Bradley Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 34.59% compared to 64.67% at Houser Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bradley Elementary School has 96 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 9.54% of student population. Houser Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 166 or about 29.17% of student population.
Bradley Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 9.24%, gifted and talented students, 5.17%, while 12.43% are in the special education program. Houser Elementary School bilingual students comprise 27.94%, gifted and talented students, 2.64%, and 14.24% are in the special education program.
60 teachers employed at Bradley Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 4.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.7 years. The 42 teachers at Houser Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Bradley Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Houser Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Bradley Elementary School there are 56 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Houser Elementary School there are 40 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by 16 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
