Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Bowman Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Carpenter Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Bowman Middle School’s regular student population is 839 with a 12.9 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Carpenter Middle School is 623 students and a 13.6 students/teacher ratio.
Bowman Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 85 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 93 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Carpenter Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 73 in student achievement, 74 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Bowman Middle School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Carpenter Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Bowman Middle School. They make up for 58.28% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (17.88%), African Americans (10.85%), Asians (10.25%) and Two or More Races (2.62%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Carpenter Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 45.59%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.43%), African Americans (20.06%), Asians (6.10%), Two or More Races (4.49%) and Native Americans (0.32%).
Based on household incomes, Bowman Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 60.07% compared to 55.38% at Carpenter Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bowman Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 39.81% of its student population compared to 18.62% at Carpenter Middle School.
Bowman Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 39.57%, gifted and talented students, 17.04%, while 13.83% are in the special education program. Carpenter Middle School bilingual students comprise 18.46%, gifted and talented students, 14.29%, and 18.46% are in the special education program.
Bowman Middle School's 65 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years. Teachers at Carpenter Middle School, numbering 45 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years.
Of its teaching staff, Bowman Middle School has five teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 20 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
