Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Birkes Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Lee Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Birkes Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,022 with a 13.6 students/teacher ratio while Lee Elementary School has 814 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.1 students/teacher ratio.
Birkes Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 94 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Lee Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 76 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Birkes Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Lee Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Birkes Elementary School. They make up for 34.93% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (27.89%), African Americans (15.66%), Asians (13.60%), Two or More Races (7.34%) and Native Americans (0.39%).
At Lee Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 63.02% of student population, followed by African Americans (13.27%), Asians (10.93%), Whites or Caucasians (9.34%), Two or More Races (2.46%) and Native Americans (0.86%).
Based on household incomes, the Birkes Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 45.89% compared to 75.80% at Lee Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Birkes Elementary School has 139 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 13.60% of student population. Lee Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 307 or about 37.71% of student population.
Birkes Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 13.31%, gifted and talented students, 8.51%, while 12.82% are in the special education program. Lee Elementary School bilingual students comprise 36.49%, gifted and talented students, 3.32%, and 10.81% are in the special education program.
75 teachers employed at Birkes Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 11.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.9 years. The 54 teachers at Lee Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Birkes Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 17 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Lee Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Birkes Elementary School there are 73 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 16 special education teachers are being assisted by 25 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
