Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Birdwell School, which is a part of TYLER ISD, with Griffin Elementary School, which is a part of TYLER ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Birdwell School has a regular student population of 441 with a 16.6 students/teacher ratio while Griffin Elementary School has 655 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.2 students/teacher ratio.
Birdwell School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Griffin Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 67 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Birdwell School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Griffin Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Birdwell School is Hispanics who make up nearly 92.06% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (4.99%), African Americans (1.59%) and Two or More Races (1.36%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
At Griffin Elementary School, Hispanics make up 67.48% of student population, followed by African Americans (27.18%), Whites or Caucasians (3.66%), Two or More Races (1.22%) and Native Americans (0.46%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Birdwell School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 80.50% compared to 98.17% at Griffin Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Birdwell School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 71.88% of its student population compared to 44.27% at Griffin Elementary School.
Birdwell School’s bilingual students comprise 94.56%, gifted and talented students, 13.15%, while 7.94% are in the special education program. Griffin Elementary School bilingual students comprise 44.12%, gifted and talented students, 3.82%, and 8.40% are in the special education program.
26 teachers employed at Birdwell School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.5 years. The 40 teachers at Griffin Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Birdwell School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Griffin Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
