Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Berry Miller Junior High School, which is a part of PEARLAND ISD, with Sam Jamison Middle School, which is a part of PEARLAND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Berry Miller Junior High School’s regular student population is 799 with a 16.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Sam Jamison Middle School is 806 students and a 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Berry Miller Junior High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 99 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Berry Miller Junior High School bagged all seven distinction awards in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Sam Jamison Middle School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Berry Miller Junior High School. They make up for 35.04% of student population, followed by Hispanics (23.78%), Asians (19.27%), African Americans (16.65%), Two or More Races (4.63%) and Native Americans (0.63%).
The student population at Sam Jamison Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 45.16%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (28.04%), African Americans (18.11%), Two or More Races (4.59%), Asians (3.72%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
Based on household incomes, the Berry Miller Junior High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 22.78% compared to 43.80% at Sam Jamison Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Berry Miller Junior High School has 27 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.38% of student population. Sam Jamison Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 160 or about 19.85% of student population.
