When we compared Bellaire High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Waltrip High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Bellaire High School’s regular student population is 3,115 with a student-teacher ratio of 17.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Waltrip High School is 1,711 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.9 students/teacher ratio.
Bellaire High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 86 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 79 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Waltrip High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 71 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 76 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Bellaire High School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Waltrip High School’s only distinction designation is in Read/ELA.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Bellaire High School. They make up for 40.67% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (22.47%), African Americans (20.58%), Asians (13.32%), Two or More Races (2.38%) and Native Americans (0.29%).
At Waltrip High School, Hispanics make up 77.09% of student population, followed by African Americans (14.67%), Whites or Caucasians (6.90%), Two or More Races (0.70%), Asians (0.41%) and Native Americans (0.23%).
Based on household incomes, the Bellaire High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 48.51% compared to 77.09% at Waltrip High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bellaire High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 14.51% of its student population compared to 22.09% at Waltrip High School.
Bellaire High School’s bilingual students comprise 13.71%, gifted and talented students, 38.33%, while 6.87% are in the special education program. Waltrip High School bilingual students comprise 20.98%, gifted and talented students, 19.17%, and 11.22% are in the special education program.
Bellaire High School's 177 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 10.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 14.7 years. Waltrip High School's 107 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 10.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Bellaire High School has 15 teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 34 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 55 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 25 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 40 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. Bellaire High School has two special education teachers assisted by 8 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Waltrip High School has three special education teachers and 8 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
