Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Bee Cave Elementary School, which is a part of LAKE TRAVIS ISD, with Lake Travis Elementary School, which is a part of LAKE TRAVIS ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Bee Cave Elementary School has a regular student population of 714 with a 14.3 students/teacher ratio while Lake Travis Elementary School has 777 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.5 students/teacher ratio.
Bee Cave Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Lake Travis Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 67 in student achievement, 65 in school progress, 51 in closing performance gaps and 62 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Bee Cave Elementary School and Lake Travis Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Bee Cave Elementary School is Whites or Caucasians who make up nearly 71.71% of student population, followed by Hispanics (11.76%), Asians (7.56%), Two or More Races (7.00%), African Americans (1.68%) and Native Americans (0.28%).
The student population at Lake Travis Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 52.51%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (41.57%), Two or More Races (3.09%), African Americans (1.29%), Asians (1.29%) and Native Americans (0.13%).
Based on household incomes, the Bee Cave Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 4.34% compared to 38.10% at Lake Travis Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bee Cave Elementary School has 23 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.22% of student population. Lake Travis Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 309 or about 39.77% of student population.
In addition, Bee Cave Elementary School has 3.08% bilingual students, 3.08% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.03% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Lake Travis Elementary School with 39.90% bilingual students, 3.99% gifted and talented students and 14.54% students in the special education program.

The 47 teachers at Lake Travis Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 4.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.8 years.

Lake Travis Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Bee Cave Elementary School there are 46 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
