Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Beard Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, with Howsman Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Beard Elementary School has a regular student population of 639 with a 16.4 students/teacher ratio while Howsman Elementary School has 708 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.6 students/teacher ratio.
Beard Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Howsman Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 67 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 82 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Beard Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in 25% closing performance gaps. Howsman Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Beard Elementary School. They make up for 43.82% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.59%), Asians (14.71%), Two or More Races (4.07%), African Americans (2.50%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
At Howsman Elementary School, Hispanics make up 77.97% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.32%), Whites or Caucasians (9.04%), Two or More Races (2.12%), Asians (0.99%) and Native Americans (0.42%).
Based on household incomes, the Beard Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 12.05% compared to 77.82% at Howsman Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Beard Elementary School has 52 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 8.14% of student population. Howsman Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 188 or about 26.55% of student population.
Beard Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 0.31%, gifted and talented students, 8.61%, while 11.74% are in the special education program. Howsman Elementary School bilingual students comprise 33.33%, gifted and talented students, 5.08%, and 13.84% are in the special education program.
39 teachers employed at Beard Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 14.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 18 years. The 52 teachers at Howsman Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.5 years.
