Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Austin Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Runyan Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Austin Elementary School has a regular student population of 806 with a 14.7 students/teacher ratio while Runyan Elementary School has 596 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.6 students/teacher ratio.
Austin Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Runyan Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only three distinction designations or awards for performance. For Austin Elementary School these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and with 25% student progress while Runyan Elementary School secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Austin Elementary School. They make up for 59.18% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (37.84%), Two or More Races (1.36%), African Americans (0.99%), Native Americans (0.50%) and Asians (0.12%).
At Runyan Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 65.10% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (21.64%), African Americans (8.22%), Two or More Races (2.52%), Asians (1.51%) and Native Americans (1.01%).
Based on household incomes, the Austin Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 74.94% compared to 81.71% at Runyan Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Austin Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 40.94% of its student population compared to 48.49% at Runyan Elementary School.
In addition, Austin Elementary School has 40.45% bilingual students, 2.61% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.43% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Runyan Elementary School with 48.66% bilingual students, 3.86% gifted and talented students and 11.24% students in the special education program.

The 40 teachers at Runyan Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 3.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.3 years.

Runyan Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Austin Elementary School there are 48 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 17 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
At Runyan Elementary School there are 36 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
