Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. When we compared Armstrong Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Otto Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Armstrong Middle School’s regular student population is 616 with a 12.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Otto Middle School is 1,020 students and a 15 students/teacher ratio.
Armstrong Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Otto Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 92 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Otto Middle School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Armstrong Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Armstrong Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 66.23% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.10%), Whites or Caucasians (12.82%), Asians (3.57%) and Two or More Races (2.27%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Otto Middle School is also predominantly by Asians at 35.10%, followed by Hispanics (27.25%), Whites or Caucasians (20.29%), African Americans (12.75%), Two or More Races (4.31%) and Native Americans (0.10%).
Based on household incomes, Armstrong Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 63.64% compared to 34.90% at Otto Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Armstrong Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 43.83% of its student population compared to 22.84% at Otto Middle School.
In addition, Armstrong Middle School has 43.34% bilingual students, 10.23% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.40% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Otto Middle School with 22.55% bilingual students, 22.75% gifted and talented students and 10.49% students in the special education program.
Armstrong Middle School's 50 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years. Teachers at Otto Middle School, numbering 67 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 4.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Armstrong Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Otto Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Armstrong Middle School there are 39 female teachers and 11 male teachers.
