Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Arapaho Classical Magnet, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, with Northrich Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Arapaho Classical Magnet has a regular student population of 554 with a 13.1 students/teacher ratio while Northrich Elementary School has 331 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.2 students/teacher ratio.
Arapaho Classical Magnet performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Northrich Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 73 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 83 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Arapaho Classical Magnet and Northrich Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Arapaho Classical Magnet. They make up for 57.76% of student population, followed by Hispanics (22.56%), African Americans (9.21%), Two or More Races (5.42%), Asians (4.69%) and Native Americans (0.36%).
The student population at Northrich Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 44.11%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (26.28%), African Americans (20.24%), Two or More Races (8.16%) and Asians (1.21%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Arapaho Classical Magnet’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 27.80% compared to 67.98% at Northrich Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Arapaho Classical Magnet has 44 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 7.94% of student population. Northrich Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 88 or about 26.59% of student population.
Arapaho Classical Magnet’s bilingual students comprise 7.04%, gifted and talented students, 9.57%, while 12.45% are in the special education program. Northrich Elementary School bilingual students comprise 25.98%, gifted and talented students, 4.23%, and 22.96% are in the special education program.
42 teachers employed at Arapaho Classical Magnet have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.7 years. The 32 teachers at Northrich Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Arapaho Classical Magnet no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Northrich Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Arapaho Classical Magnet there are 39 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by one teacher only aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Northrich Elementary School there are 31 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
