Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Allen Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, with Helotes Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Allen Elementary School has a regular student population of 464 with a 12 students/teacher ratio while Helotes Elementary School has 351 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.5 students/teacher ratio.
Allen Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Helotes Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 95 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only four distinction designations or awards for outstanding performance. For Allen Elementary School these are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps while Helotes Elementary School secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Allen Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 95.47% of student population, followed by African Americans (1.94%), Whites or Caucasians (1.94%) and Two or More Races (0.65%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
The student population at Helotes Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 50.71%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (41.60%), Two or More Races (4.56%), Asians (1.99%) and African Americans (1.14%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Allen Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 91.16% compared to 17.38% at Helotes Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Allen Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 25.86% of its student population compared to 1.42% at Helotes Elementary School.
Allen Elementary School 15.95% are in the special education program, 3.88% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 27.16% students. Helotes Elementary School has no bilingual student, while 17.38% are in the special education program, and 12.54% are in the gifted and talented program students.
38 teachers employed at Allen Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 10 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14 years. The 26 teachers at Helotes Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 15.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 19.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Allen Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while two teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Helotes Elementary School has five teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, no teacher serving the school for 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Allen Elementary School there are 32 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
