Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Alexander Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Hearne Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Alexander Elementary School has a regular student population of 648 with a 12.8 students/teacher ratio while Hearne Elementary School has 824 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.4 students/teacher ratio.
Alexander Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 65 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 75 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Hearne Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 69 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Alexander Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and with 25% student progress. Except for Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Hearne Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Alexander Elementary School. They make up for 58.80% of student population, followed by African Americans (25.62%), Asians (13.12%), Whites or Caucasians (2.16%) and Two or More Races (0.15%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Hearne Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 54.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (27.79%), Asians (11.53%), Whites or Caucasians (5.58%) and Two or More Races (0.12%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Alexander Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 88.12% compared to 85.32% at Hearne Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Alexander Elementary School has 420 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 64.81% of student population. Hearne Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 548 or about 66.50% of student population.
Alexander Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 65.28%, gifted and talented students, 2.31%, while 11.57% are in the special education program. Hearne Elementary School bilingual students comprise 66.26%, gifted and talented students, 0.73%, and 11.41% are in the special education program.
50 teachers employed at Alexander Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.6 years. The 66 teachers at Hearne Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Alexander Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 20 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Hearne Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Alexander Elementary School there are 45 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
At Hearne Elementary School there are 57 female teachers and nine male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by 20 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
