Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Aikin Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, with Risd Acad, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Aikin Elementary School has a regular student population of 500 with a 12 students/teacher ratio while Risd Acad has 717 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.8 students/teacher ratio.
Aikin Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 59 in student achievement, 74 in school progress and 66 in closing performance gaps. It scored 72 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Risd Acad not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 52 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 64 in closing performance gaps and 68 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Aikin Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in Science. Risd Acad did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Aikin Elementary School. They make up for 43.40% of student population, followed by African Americans (31.20%), Asians (17.40%), Whites or Caucasians (5.40%), Two or More Races (1.80%) and Native Americans (0.60%).
At Risd Acad, Hispanics make up 91.77% of student population, followed by African Americans (3.49%), Whites or Caucasians (2.37%), Asians (1.95%), Native Americans (0.28%) and Two or More Races (0.14%).
Based on household incomes, the Aikin Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 89.80% compared to 94.84% at Risd Acad.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Aikin Elementary School has 328 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 65.60% of student population. Risd Acad has significantly more ELLs at 605 or about 84.38% of student population.
In addition, Aikin Elementary School has 65.60% bilingual students, 2.40% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.20% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Risd Acad with 84.38% bilingual students, 2.79% gifted and talented students and 11.72% students in the special education program.
41 teachers employed at Aikin Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.7 years. The 56 teachers at Risd Acad have been serving the school for an average of 4.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years.
