Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Advanced Learning Academy, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, with Huppertz Elementary School, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Advanced Learning Academy has a regular student population of 995 with a 15.8 students/teacher ratio while Huppertz Elementary School has 281 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.7 students/teacher ratio.
Advanced Learning Academy earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Huppertz Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 55 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Advanced Learning Academy's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and post-secondary. Huppertz Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Advanced Learning Academy is Hispanics who make up nearly 78.19% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (15.88%), African Americans (3.62%), Two or More Races (1.61%) and Asians (0.60%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Huppertz Elementary School, Hispanics make up 93.95% of student population, followed by African Americans (3.56%), Whites or Caucasians (1.42%) and Two or More Races (0.36%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Advanced Learning Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 50.05% compared to 92.17% at Huppertz Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Advanced Learning Academy has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 6.53% of its student population compared to 3.91% at Huppertz Elementary School.
Advanced Learning Academy 10.55% are in the special education program, 28.64% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 6.13% students. Huppertz Elementary School has no bilingual student, while 16.01% are in the special education program, and 2.49% are in the gifted and talented program students.
63 teachers employed at Advanced Learning Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 4.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.3 years. The 20 teachers at Huppertz Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 3.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Advanced Learning Academy has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Huppertz Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, three teachers have worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Advanced Learning Academy there are 46 female teachers and 16 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
