How to File for Homestead Exemption

Remember to File for Homestead Exemption only if you purchased your Home the previous year. For those who closed anything starting January 1, 2020 will not qualify for the exemption this year. The process is very simple and you can even file over your phone. Pretty cool isn't it! so don't freak out, you got this!

 THINGS YOU WILL NEED

  1. Name of Owner/s
  2. Marital status (single, married, other)
  3. ID# of either (DL,SSN, or Personal ID Cerfiticate)
  4. Percentage of ownership (do you purchase the home with your significant other)
  5. Date your purchased the home
  6. When you moved in
  7. Physical Address
  8. Legal Address (lot & block #'s with subdivision information) 

HOW TO FILE:

click for mobile online HCAD Mobile Online Services.

You can now electronically file your residential homestead exemption online utilizing the HCAD Mobile App.   To submit the homestead application utilizing the mobile app, you will need 4 items.

  1. The date of occupancy on your residence. 
  2. Your TX drivers license
  3. An iPhone or Android phone
  4. The HCAD Info and Exemptions app (found in the App Store or Google Play)
