Summer Survival Tips

Houston summers can be quite intense! The heat, the humidity, the mosquitoes…there’s lots of things to think about!!! I’ve included some tips on things to do to prepare for summer as well as supplies you may want to stock up!!

Preparation

  • Planning to spend time outdoors in your yard? Consider spraying for bugs, specifically ticks and mosquitoes, during the spring months. Many companies feature options that are “greener” as well as safe for pets and children.
  • Install an outdoor fan! This will be nice if you want to relax in your backyard after work with a glass of wine.
  • Service your air conditioner. The last thing you need is your AC going out on a hot day in July. Make sure it’s in good working order now!
  • Have kiddos at home? Looking for a cheap option to entertain them during the hot months without breaking the bank to build a pool? Consider a kiddie pool, water table or even a good ole fashioned sprinkler to keep them happy and cool all summer long.
  • No time to deal with moving that manual sprinkler around your lawn? Have a sprinkler system installed. Watering your yard regularly, in addition to keeping your grass green, will help prevent major foundation shifts, especially if it’s a dry summer.
  • Sign up for swim lessons. Swimming is such a great way to actually enjoy being outside during those summer months. However, it is very important kids have an understanding of water safety and the skill set to swim safely in pools. Many YMCA’s and local swim schools offer swim clinics during the summer to learn new skills or brush up from last season.
  • Know where to play outdoors safely. Pools and splash pads are a much better idea during the summer to help keep you cool. Houston has public pools, as well as splash pads at public parks to play around in!
  • Get your pets prepared. Want to take up jogging with your pooch? Now is not the time. Dogs can suffer from heat stroke just like humans, so beginning a new exercise routine with Fido can wait till the fall. Try to walk your pets first thing in the morning or later in the evening so they don’t risk burning their paws on the sidewalk. If you’re planning to be out and about awhile, make sure to pack a travel bowl and extra waters for them too!

Supplies

  • Bug Spray – Can’t have enough of this stuff!
  • Suntan lotion – Texas sun is brutal! Stock up and slather on the lotion if you plan to spend time outdoors.
  • Sunglasses, hats and sun shirts – Especially if you’re a parent, these items will help keep the kiddos playing longer without risking sunburn.
  • Generator – Houston is notorious for their storms. Having a generator on hand will help you live easier should your power go out.
  • Water bottles, batteries and canned goods – Can’t hurt to have a small supply of these items on hand in addition to the generator should a major storm hit Houston again.
  • Reusable Water Bottle – Having disposable waters on hand is a smart plan for emergencies however it’s not very environmentally friendly. Invest in a good reusable water bottle that will keep your drinks cold all summer long!
  • Coolers – BBQ’s, picnics, tailgating, crawfish boils, pool parties…there’s always an occasion you’ll need a cooler for!
  • First Aid Kit/Medical Supplies – Stock up on band aids for cuts and scrapes, aloe for sunburn, calamine lotion for bug bites and whatever else you may need!
